Korane, a close ally of Garissa Township MP and former leader of Majority Aden Duale is currently at the 33,156 voter mark, with the incumbent Nathif Jama at 29,340 votes.

The two are the frontrunners in the tight race, and have been exchanging the lead from the time results started trickling in.

The other four contestants have a handful of votes, with ANC’s Bashir Haji garnering 585 votes and Ahmed Hire amassing 452 votes with 58 per cent of the cast votes counted.

Korane based his campaigns on issues that Jama failed to address during his four year reign, and took advantage of cases that the governor had in court over misuse and misappropriation of county funds.
