Kenyans on Twitter have expressed divided opinions after the signing of the controversial cyber bill by President Uhuru Kenyatta today.The signed law on Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Bill 2018 is aimed to criminalize abuse of persons on social media, removing the legal lacuna that existed.
The new law spells out stiff punishment and measures to cybercriminals. It also provides for timely and effective detection, prevention, response, investigation, and prosecution of computer and cybercrimes. According to the Bill attracts a maximum of Sh5 million in fines or 10 years in prison or both
Kenyans on social media have expressed mixed reactions.A section of Kenyans have argued that the new law will limit freedom of expression.They have also argued that the law is retrogressive and unconstitutional.Here are some of the reactions from KOT;
@RobertAlai The signing of the #ComputerCrimesBill by the President is such an act in futility and move meant to silence those who are making noise against the runaway corruption. People agree to send each other nudes, WTF do you care? Sending nudity is dangerous than cyber terrorism? Jeez!!
@muthoninjakwe The bill is retrogressive and unconstitutional
@Rosta hii #ComputerCrimesBill imeruin our sundays tweets. Sundays after church was the official day for #KOT to battle against there weaklings.
@NwYactor Those who've been earning & gaining publicity on hate, false & fake news are in great panic.....
@Calvinokoth Hhehee, and your work as anti-RAO blogger must be checked, the next time you intentionally publish false information to dent Raila's name, tutakutana kortini
@champengn @RobertAlai For once I agree with you.
@LeleFrancis EMMANUAL CHACHA jailed for life by a Mombasa court after pleading guilty to trafficking 155 rolls of bhang worth Sh23,250. A person who stole hundreds of millions is jailed for 4 months and fined 1 million Cybercrimes Bill #TwawezaLive #FailedJudiciaryLeadership
@cayvooh The despotic duo is out there silencing public criticism. While people are out there looting NYS money. @UKenyatta This is where we part ways. Is this what you were to revisit? We hava a failed judicial system how then is the implementation of the Cybercrimes Bill.
@cyruzkariuki Cybercrimes bill is unconstitutional. Any attempt to criminalize free speech is dictatorial.
@paulomtangazaji it would have been better if we started with Corruption bill before Cybercrimes Bill . I don't agree with cyber bullying but again some people used that bill to protect themselves from being exposed by bloggers. Hackers and related criminals can go drying
