Several houses have been disconnected from the electricity grid after the power provider, Kenya Power launched a raid on Thursday April 8, 2016.
The disconnected connections include private and public premises thus commercial and residential homes including prominent companies.
The affected estates include Makadara, Embakasi, Kwa Mangeli, KMC, Site and slums located along Mombasa Road, a few houses neighboring the Athi River based Export Processing Zone Authority were not yet affected.
Samuel Mutua, a care taker of an apartment in Makadara estate told this writer that the operations were such tense that landlords of the affected houses could not intervene.
“Officers from Kenya Power have today conducted an operation that has never been seen in this town before, they have disconnected houses rented by individual tenants and instructed that even the landlord should not interfere with the meter boxes,” said Mutua.
Mutua said all the disconnected houses’ inhabitants owed the company arrears of more than Sh1,000.
“They only disconnected metres of tenants with arrears of Sh1,000 and above, those with bellow that were excused but instructed to clear their bills,” said Mutua.
Mutua said for the apartment he takes care of, the land lord had to clear a Sh2,000 arrears for security lights bill before they were re-connected.
He said that majority of the residents have to be in the dark until they sort out their outstanding electricity arrears,” some have more than Sh30,000 as electricity bills,” he said.
