Kenya Premier League side Sony Sugar have pulled out of the ongoing GOtv shield on the eleventh hour, opting to instead focus on their unimpressive league campaign where they sit rock bottom.
The sugar millers were scheduled to square it with second division side Rainforest FC in Naivasha on Saturday, June 2 in the round of 64 before the surprise change of heart that was conveyed through their official Facebook page.
"We have officially withdrawn from the Sportpesa Shield Competition. Focus fully shifts on the league to have a better finish," read part of the post.
In the last edition of the tournament, the Awendo-based side emerged third behind eventual winners AFC Leopards and runners-up Kariobangi Sharks.
However, their slump in form lately which have seen them collect a measly 14 points from 17 outings to occupy the last position on the Sportpesa Premier League (SPL) log is largely to attribute to their change of focus.
The team lost their final match of the first leg encounter 0-1 to Gor Mahia in Kisumu and will be hoping for a miraculous second leg campaign to help them avoid the relegation chop that is now hanging dangerously over their necks.
Their next league match is on June 10 against fellow strugglers Nakumatt FC.
