Kenya Premier League side Vihiga United FC defender Denis Ombeva is mourning after losing 12 of his relatives following a ghastly road carnage that claimed his mother and eleven other relatives at the Kamukuywa Bridge along the Kitale-Webuye road on Monday evening.
Speaking to Sportpesa News on Tuesday the hard tackling defender who recently steered his team to the 2018 Kenya's top tier league revealed that his mother Esther Boge and eleven other relatives were travelling from Kitale after a family gathering when the tragic accident happened killing all of them.
"We are trying to come to terms with the devastating news.The past ten hours or so have been hard to bear,it is a huge loss to the entire family," Ombeva said.The player also called for prayers saying the loss was too big to bear."All the occupants in the Nissan and saloon car were people known to me,five cousins,an aunt and an uncle,stepmother and four neighbors are well known to me.I'm trying to come to terms," he added.
Ombeva was however thankful to his club and teammates whom he said have offered hin overwhelming support at this trying moment.
"The team is my other family.The phone calls and messages of support have been overwhelming," he said.
Vihiga United will make their maiden appearance in the 2018 Kenya Premier League season after coming tops in the National Super League.
