Speaking in Brussels, Transport Cabinet Secretary said that the ministry is working on a strategy dubbed ‘Operation Pride,’ to help the company back up.

“You’ve seen us asking people at senior levels to leave and so we shall be restoring capacity in terms of management of that very critical company to our country,” said Macharia.

It was not long ago that pilots of the airline had a standoff where they demanded the sacking of the Chief Executive Officer Mbuvi Ngunze. The strike had the government hold a meeting with the board members and pilots to resolve the issue.

The pilots’ seemed to have come to an agreement with the board members and Ngunze remained in office as they resumed their duties.

The national carrier has had a lot of financial struggles in the last year.

Macharia stated that sourcing capital from a viable investor would be an option the ministry would consider.

“What we are doing is to sit with the board of directors to see how we can help them raise money to restore the financial viability of the airline,” he said.

In July, the company is set to lay off over 600 employees as a way of cost cutting.
