On Wednesday, January 3, uncollected cargo worth millions of Shillings was auctioned by the Kenya Revenue Authority officials at the port of Mombasa.
The Southern Region KRA deputy commissioner-in-charge Nicholas Kinoti speaking at the customs warehouse at the port said that the authority gave the importers a thirty day period to pay the duty in which they failed to.
He insisted that importers should pay duty for their imported cargo and a forfeit in payment will mandate KRA to auction the cargo.
“It is important for importers to pay duty when their goods arrive at the port of Mombasa. If they fail to do so, the KRA is mandated to auction the goods to generate revenue,” Nicholas Kinoti said.
The KRA official has called upon Kenyans to participate in the next auction slated to be on the 17th of January.
Vehicles, household items, electrical appliances, traveling bags and washing machines were among the goods under the hammer.
Mombasa businessmen speaking to the nation said that this year's auction was transparent than previous years.
“In the previous auctioneering, there used to be numerous complaints of favouritism, but this time around, the exercise was conducted fairly,” A Mombasa businessman Bipin Narandas said speaking to the Nation.
KRA sold goods worth sh 100 million in the last auction conducted last year.
