Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officials on Tuesday impounded three luxury cars declared as personal effects and house goods at the Port of Mombasa.
KRA Commissioner of Customs Julius Musyoki said after scanning the 40-foot cargo container, KRA officials seized the three vehicles valued at Sh28 million.
Mr Musyoki said the vehicles, two Range Rovers and one Mercedes Benz, were concealed behind baby walkers and used mattresses which had been declared as personal effects and household goods.
“The three vehicles were concealed in a cargo container loaded with baby walkers and used mattresses, earlier shipped from the United Kingdom. The vehicles are detained at the Customs Warehouse for safe custody,” said Mr Musyoki.
He said their scanner had not spotted the carefully concealed cargo but the officers became suspicious and subjected the container to 100 per cent verification.
The commissioner noted that the government would have lost Sh8.5 million in tax revenue if the importer successively sneaked the cargo from the port.
The cargo is said to have been imported by Mr Saidar Muteweta and were destined to a Mr Abubakari Sekimwanyi, a consignee in Uganda.
Speaking tojournalists at the port, Mr Musyoki said that KRA was liaising with Interpol, Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Regional Intelligence Liaison Office to establish how the cargo was brought into the Port of Mombasa.
