The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has intercepted fake currency worth over Sh267 million at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
In a statement to newsrooms on Monday, KRA said the money was being ferried from Nairobi to Dubai by Abdi Osman a Norwegian, and Mohamed Hassan Eltahir ElHassan, a Sudanese.
The two, who are now in police custody, had the money packed in two suitcases concealed in trouser linings.
"The money was seized on Thursday at around 10.30pm, at Gate 7 JKIA during our shift operations, following intelligence that the two were suspects," said Mr Julius Musyoki, Commissioner Customs and Border Control.
Mr Musyoki said the money was in 25 bundles of average 178 notes of 500 Euro bills.
The passengers were traveling to Dubai aboard EK722 to UAE and according to the flight itinerary, they were to come back to Nairobi today (Monday) then proceed to Mogadishu, Somalia on Wednesday.
The exhibits are being held at the customs warehouse awaiting issuance of seizure notice and subsequent handover to the police for investigations.
Musyoki said KRA has tightened the noose over masterminds of illegal cargo at all border points countrywide, adding that the Authority is keen to ensure that Kenya is not used as a dumping ground for counterfeit goods.
