Customs officials at the Port of Mombasa intercepted a container suspected to contain two luxury vehicles which were not declared by the importer.
Scanned images of the Container NO MSKUI849826BL957361627 show it was loaded with two Range Rovers that had not been declared, in an attempt to evade taxes.
According to the images, the container was also loaded with two other units of vehicles, a Peugeot and a Toyota Corolla which were duly manifested.
The saloon vehicles were loaded at the front of the container in an apparent move to conceal the Range Rovers.
The importer also declared that the container was carrying 600 bicycles but scanned images contradict the number since less than 200 bicycles could be visible.
Further, the importer declared another consignment of 200 bales of used clothing, 10 tables and 6 engines which are not visible in the scanned image.
The container will be subjected to 100 percent verification as KRA officials and other government agencies launch investigations to find out the reasons why the container has inconsistencies and also to unearth those behind the latest scandal.
Kenya Revenue Authority has tightened the noose against the masterminds of the syndicate involved in evading tax by mis-declaring and under declaring of goods.
Efforts by Customs officials to contain the syndicate have in the recent past have been successful, with several vehicles being seized and a number of suspects being charged in court.
