The Kenya Revenue Authority will now invade your home if you are suspected of tax evasion, without backing of the police.

This is according to The Finance Bill 2017 which was amended to enable the authority launch investigations and seize material as part of evidence.

Raids by KRA are usually the last course of action taken if a suspected tax evaders does not honour summons by the taxman.

Treasury secretary Henry Rotich last year amended the law and introduced new provisions that appeared to take away the KRA’s search and seizure powers.

In an internal circular to its staff KRA, stated that the amendment would restore their powers and disengage them from involving the police.

“The proposal to amend Section 7 is to allow KRA officers to initiate prosecution and produce seized evidence in tribunal or court of law,” communication from KRA stated.
