All Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Personal Identification Number (PIN) holders who wish to avoid paying penalties have been advised to file their tax returns ahead of the June 30 submission deadline.
This is after KRA officials dismissed as a misconception the popular notion that only taxpayers or those with tax obligation ought to undertake the exercise.
Gladys Mokua a KRA officer based in Kisii, advised those in possession of KRA pins but are neither employed nor have any tax obligation to ensure that they file a ‘NIL’ tax return in order to avoid paying penalties in case they apply for tax compliance certificates.
Mokua noted that those with zero tax obligations will face the Sh1000 minimum charge annually even if they are not subjected to the 5 percent of the net tax due for every period of 12 months penalty.
The KRA officer made the remarks on Wednesday at KRA tent in Kisii town meant to equip users with skills on online tax services also popularly known as iTax .
The exercise is conducted in the wake of an outcry among civil servants across Kisii County who complained of frustration in using the system.
