The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has seized three containers believed to have been containing contraband goods at the Port of Mombasa.
This comes a week after the authority seized seven containers and suspended four Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) custom officials over alleged involvement in a tax evasion scheme.
Confirming the raid on Friday afternoon, KRA Customs and Border Control Commissioner Julius Musyoki disclosed that the containers were intercepted for verification after an alarm was raised over its contents.
“We seized three containers on Friday and upon opening them, we confirmed that they indeed contained contraband goods,” said Mr Musyoki.
The commissioner issued a stern warning to importers who import goods through backdoor means, saying that the goods will henceforth be destroyed and legal action taken against the owners.
