The Kenya Revenue Authority has seized two containers with illegal milk powder which had been declared as gypsum board at Mombasa port.
According to KRA, the government would have lost about Sh14 million in taxes had the milk powder found its way into the market.
According to the Star, KRA further said the consignment arrived on October 1 aboard MV Marie Delmas, and was destined for TIRUMALA Enterprises in Kampala, Uganda.
The consignment, according to documents presented by the shipping agent, were supplied by RIA IMPO Exporters of UAE.
"The authority is working in collaboration with Uganda Revenue Authority officials to ensure the perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted," read the statement as quoted by the Star.
KRA said its officers at the port profiled and targeted the containers - No. SEGU4628096 and TCLU1505551 - on October 17.
Port officials said the containers were scanned two days later and the images confirmed that they contained milk powder.
The taxman ordered 100 per cent physical verification of the contents, in the presence of other government agencies.
