The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is seeking the right to access individual and company mobile money transactions in its fresh war against tax evasion.
KRA Commissioner General John Njiraini said the move is part of the authority’s plan to expand its tax payer base by including individuals and businesses trading at the retail level, according to Nation Fm.
“We plan to focus on merchant transactions before moving to other mobile money transactions," said Njiraini.
However, the authority which is reeling from a shortfall of Sh 69.1 billion on its revenue collection target hopes the new move will unearth income sources that have not been declared in tax returns.
The authority is also aiming to be among the top 50 countries in the world in terms of ease of doing business.
Njiraini said they expect to achieve the target in the next three years.
This comes after KRA announced it will soon change its tax collection system at the port of Mombasa to ease collection of goods.
