The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has unearthed a tax evasion syndicate at the Port of Mombasa.
KRA commissioner general John Njiraini said 104 containers were illegally removed from the port between June and July, leading to a loss of Sh100 million.
Njiriani said different players in the sector including importers and their clearing agents, transport service providers, Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and KRA staff are suspected of being involved in the illegal business.
According to The Star, four customs and border control officers were suspended in May following the unprocedural removal of seven containers from the Kilindini port.
“Clearing agents and transporters who handled the cargo have been identified, apprehended and recorded statements. Relevant charges will be preferred against the culprits,” said Njiraini.
Njiriani further said they will soon impound the 29 trucks which ferried the cargo out of the port, adding that they are committed to ensuring the culprits are brought to book and the taxes recovered.
“The scheme came to light recently during a routine reconciliation exercise by customs staff to ensure proper accountability for container stocks at the port. The exercise was also meant to facilitate the identification of overstayed containers for auction,” Njiraini said.
He, however, said they are working with KPA to address the weaknesses identified.
