Mavoko nominated MCA Veronica Mativo has urged the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to sensitise Mavoko residents on the importance of filing their taxes.

Speaking to the public at Kinanie shopping centre on Thursday, the MCA said most locals have not filed their taxes because they have inadequate information about the taxing process.

She said the constitution requires every citizen to pay taxes and file returns.

“The Kenya Revenue Authority should sensitise the public on tax payments and filing so that citizens are able to conform as required by the law,” she said.

The nominated MCA also asked KRA to extend the period required for filing returns to enable more people to submit their returns.

She said most residents in Mavoko did not meet the June 30 tax filing deadline and it will be fair if the KRA extended the period.

The MCA said that the online method (i-tax) adopted by KRA for payment of taxes is complicated and some people especially those at the grass root level do not understand it.

At the same time, Mativo asked the government to take action against tax evaders. She noted that some well known companies and individuals could be evading tax.

The MCA said tax evasion is an economic crime whose perpetrators should face the law.
