The Kenya Rugby Union has called on clubs to submit alteast three volunteers to undergo training as referees.A statement from the Union released on Tuesday said that the referees will take charge of weekend games and will also assist during training sessions.This move has come after the previous weekend was marred with officiating crisis at the Kenya Cup.
In a recent incident saw Quins team manager Jimmy Mnene being a referee assistant at the Ngong road Derby between Harlequins and and impala. The referee of match was David Orato. Elsewhere Collins Injera was called upon to officiate a match between Mwamba and KCB.The Union has also defended it's move saying that it's in line with Rugby management standards. The statement further said that the referees will be considered for international assignments.“This is in line with the World Rugby mandate allowing match organizers to appoint match officials. This panel will also recommend match officials for international assignments and training programmes,” the statement said.The Union has set up a selection panel that includes referees that will be mandated for registration, training and allocation of matches.
