The Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH) has set measures of setting up Gender Based Violence (GBV) recovery center to cater for the increasing numbers of survivors visiting the hospital.
The center will handle GBV survivors including those who have undergone rape, defilement, and sodomy, physical assault, female genital mutilation.
Speaking to the press, the Hospital’s chief executive officer, Dr Enock Ondari said that the hospital management was concerned by the increasing cases of gender based violence hence there is a need for the centre.
According to him, the Referral Hospital intends to set up the rescue center in a private location within the vicinity away from other patients so that the survivors can comfortably relate their experiences.
“The hospital has been receiving many cases of GBV survivors which have made us reason that we need to set up recovery center where they can receive medical help,” Ondari said.
“We are aware that setting of the centre the victims will be able to consult medical personnel in privacy and without fear,” added Dr Ondari.
Dr Ondari also said that the hospital exempts all charges involved in the treatment of GBV survivors by saying that the free treatment is an initiative introduced by the national government to ease the survivors’ recovery process.
