Kisumu Urban Planning (KUP) has set aside Sh700 million to rehabilitate three major markets in Kisumu county.

The funds will rehabilitate Kibuye, Jubilee and Otonglo to the tune of Sh350, 250 and 100 million respectively.

Speaking during the cleaning programme at the Kisumu bus Park, acting City Manager Doris Ombara said that the Sh700 million will also cater for the reviving and improving the market to the level of modern market.

"We are sourcing for the designers to come with modern touch of market. The market will have designated areas for cereals, fish market, second hand clothes (mtumba) and enough parking space," said Ombara.

“All the hawkers will be out of the streets and have designated area within the three markets,” she added.

The acting City Manager said that Kisumu Urban Planning is currently sourcing for contract to contract the three markets.

"We are sourcing for local expertise and we will advertise market tenders on the local dailies," she said.

Ombara said that the tenders will be offered on joint bidding system to maximise on taping local skills.

She said that the KUP will have a seminar at the Kisumu municipal building, to give priority to local labour, supplies of the construction materials.
