The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) now wants grades for students joining Teachers Training Colleges to be hiked.
KUPPET Secretary General Akello Misori said teachers are key players in achieving the key reforms in the education sector, but this cannot be achieved if those who go for training in various teacher training colleges are those who performed poorly in the national examinations.
He stated that the entry point for teachers especially those in primary school must be re-looked.
"Having stronger candidates in teachers training colleges will ensure the graduates from the institution are a thoroughly prepared teaching force ready to deliver in class," said Misori.
“Students to a large extent are bright and if they find teachers who are obsolete they will not make education relevant,” said Misori.
He also called for introduction of technology to students early enough at the Early childhood education centres level to make them interact with sophisticated equipment with ease and freedom.
He stated that education in Kenya is mostly driven by examination result and therefore competency based programmes will be supported so that students are all rounded when they graduate to other levels of education.
