Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) has attributed the unrest being witnessed in schools across the country to 'unpopular measures' taken by the Cabinet Secretary for education Dr Fred Matiang’i.
Kisumu County Kuppet executive secretary Zablon Awange said students are up in arms due to the number of changes being spearheaded by Dr Matiang’i.
Awange said upon taking over the ministry, the CS made a raft of measures that were largely disputed by the learners.
“Banning prayers for KCSE students, visitation, merging exam centres amongst others are some of the directives that have angered our students,” said Awange.
He said students are revolting against the measures which they feel will limit their freedom.
Speaking to journalists in Kisumu on Wednesday during the branch executive committee meeting, Awange said that the steps that were taken by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to interdict some teachers following the infernos will not solve the menace.
“I want to appeal to TSC to revoke the interdictions and allow these teachers back to class,” he said.
He said the country risks seeing more schools going up in flames during third term, if no proper solution is found.
Awange said a possible solution would be the CS rescinding some of the measures he had communicated to the school heads.
