In a phone interview on Thursday, Nyakweba said the move will ensure schools compete against each other thus improve student performance.

"It is a new dawn for Kenya after the national assembly passed a motion that requires Knec to start ranking schools in national examinations," said Nyakweba.

"You know competition is healthy and I urge all stakeholders mostly schools to embrace the move because I know some which have not been doing well in national exams will put measures in place to improve their performance," added Nyakweba.

Ranking of schools was banned by former Education Cabinet secretary Jacob Kaimenyi in 2014, a move that elicited mixed reactions from stakeholders.
