The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) Uasin Gishu secretary general Rosemary Murundu says that all prospective college students should undergo paramilitary training.
She proposed that all students who complete form four be enrolled for paramilitary training through the National Youth Service (NYS) before joining colleges and universities as one way of fighting terrorism.
Speaking in her office on Thursday, Murundu said that the training would offer basic skills that would enable them survive terror attacks.
She says the government should reintroduce the compulsory paramilitary training for the youth after secondary school saying the measure will go a long way in fighting terrorism.
"It is vital to equip students with the skill and knowledge on how to fight terrorism incase they are attacked since learning institutions have been the soft target for al-Shabaab terrorists," she said.
She urged the government to implement the teachers’ salaries as per the industrial court ruling of a 50-60 percent pay rise. She warns that if it doesn't happen, schools will not be opened for the third term.
It is during the third term that the final national examinations are carried out for both, secondary and primary schools. The Kenya National Examinations’ Council tasks teachers with the invigilation and supervision of the exercise.
