Uasin Gishu Kenya Union of Post Primary Education of Teachers (KUPPET) secretary general Elijah Maiyo has urged Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) to be giving their loans to first year university students.
He said this will help students from poor background access the loan before joining university.
“It’s sad that poor students who have qualified to join universities cannot be admitted since they cannot afford to pay their first year fees. Where do you want them to get the fees yet they cannot afford even a single meal,” he said in Eldoret town, Monday.
“We want the National Assembly to pass legislations that will allow student’s access loans two months prior to admission. This will ensure every student access university education,” he added.
He, however, called upon Teachers Service Commission County directors to identify schools with teacher’s scarcity for them to be considered during recruitment process.
"We want TSC county directors to have a say in teacher’s recruitment since they are the ones who know schools with teachers shortage," noted Maiyo.
