Long after the government banned corporal punishment in schools, Nyamira County Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers’ (KUPPET) branch secretary wants re-introduction of caning as way a of curbing indiscipline.

Mr. Lewis Nyakweba, who was speaking in Nyamira township, argued that most school going children have been displaying a dropping graph in terms of discipline, which is affecting their academic performance negatively.

The KUPPET secretary also blamed the ministry of education of always setting rules and creating laws without involving them, considering they are the main stakeholders of the education sector, adding that something must be done to ensure that security of teachers is safeguarded as most of the pupils who commit such offences are candidates.

He urged parents and teachers to join hands and create an amicable environment for the students to shape their social character, and further appealed to students to always observe school ethics and respect their teachers.

Nyakweba was reacting to a recently witnessed incident where a form four student from one of the secondary schools in Nyamira County is alleged to have attacked his teacher and disappeared.
