Esther Chelagat, 60, while appearing before Justice Maureen Odero denied having caused the death of Peninah Chebet.

Chelagat was arraigned in court after 'helping' Chebet do an abortion at Kiptororo village in Kuresoi North on March 10 this year, a development that led to the girl's death.

She said she only took the deceased to Kericho District Hospital where she died.

Justice Odero said that a report from the Rift Valley Level Five Hospital indicates the accused is of sound mind and can therefore stand trial.

Prosecution led by investigative officer Nixon Kitur said the accused helped the late Chebet abort but only took her to the hospital after realizing she was profusely bleeding. The young girl died after losing a lot of blood.

State lawyer Amos Chigiti told the court that the State had no objection to the accused being released on bond. Justice Odero released Chelagat on a Sh300,000 bond with a surety of a similar amount.

The Judge further ordered that the accused's lawyer be supplied with all witness statements and any other document that may be used against the accused person.

The case will be heard on June 7.
