Gatundu South MP elect Moses Kuria. He has applauded the crackdown on civil society. [Photo: Citizen Digital]Gatundu South MP elect Moses Kuria has lauded the purge that has been going on by the government on civil society organizations.Kuria says that what NGO's board Executive Director Fazul Mohammed has been doing 'is the right thing to do irrespective of the circumstances the country is in'."Don't tell me we are in an electioneering period and, therefore, everything should come to a standstill. Let the milkman deliver their milk, let the teacher go and teach and also leave Fazul to continue with his job," Kuria told Citizen TV's Opinion Court show on Thursday.Kuria noted that many civil societies have abdicated their primary role of advocacy and are actively engaged in divisive politics which he said is unacceptable."These civil societies have to decide between politics and advocating for citizens' interests. There is a difference between holding a political opinion and playing active politics. Our so-called civil societies are engaging in the latter," he added.Kuria intends to bring a raft of amendments to the Public Benefits Organizations (PBOs) Act which was passed in 2013 but is yet to be implemented. The MP said the PBOs Act contains 'fundamental flaws that make it impossible to implement' but his amendments would make it 'implementable'.Acting Interior CS Fred Matiangi, however, on Wednesday suspended the crackdown on civil society organizations giving them a 90-day window period to comply with the law.
