The Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (KUSNET) has rolled out an initiative to ensure all special needs learners are enrolled in school in Gatundu North.
The union seeks to raise funds to be used to reach out to and register all children with special needs in the country.
James Gicharu who leads the union in Gatundu North Sub County said the campaign will also lobby for the establishment of a special school in every sub-county.
He said a majority of Special Needs Education (SNE) learners are stilled being hidden in homes by their parents and guardians instead of being taken to school.
Gicharu said that most learners are caged in homes by parents who fear exposing them. He observed that most of the sub counties including Gatundu North were lacking special schools making many tarmac as they search for special schools. He said it will be fruitless if these learners are identified but have no schools to attend.
‘Our campaign will also seek to establish an advocacy center for the special needs education learner,’ he said in Kamwangi on Tuesday.
The unionist noted that the majority of SNE learners have not benefited from free primary and secondary education because most schools have not been fitted with facilities to benefit this special group of learners.
‘The increase in the number of special needs candidates who sat for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Examinations should be a wake-up call on the need to cater for this group of individuals,’ he said.
The leader said there is also need for universities and other training institutions to tailor their teaching of architecture and civil engineering courses to accommodate accessibility issues.
