Isiolo KWS Senior warden Peter Mbote said they sent a team of officers to the area to hunt down the two lionesses that have been feasting on the livestock.

The sister lionesses have killed more than 200 livestock in the last two months, something that had elicited an outcry from locals.

Mr Mbote said they will transfer the two lionesses to Kora and Meru National parks as a temporary measure to curb increased human-wildlife conflict in the area.

“We received reports of lions terrorising and killing livestock in the two areas hence launching a four-day survey conducted by our research and vet teams.”

“We also liaised with the community hence capturing the two lionesses described as the most dangerous,” said Mr Mbote as quoted by Daily Nation.

The officers had presented the caged lions that were in a lorry for public viewing where Governor Mohamed Kuti, Kenya Red Cross Secretary-General Abbas Gullet and his team were also present.

Governor Kuti lauded KWS officers saying residents and their livestock are now safer adding that the county government will continue partnering with KWS to conserve and protect wildlife and locals.

“We are grateful that the officers have managed to capture the lionesses that have been affecting locals,” said governor Kuti.

The area leaders appealed to KWS to urgently compensate the affected residents who have lost their goats, cattle and donkeys as the animals are their main source of livelihood.
