The Kenya Wildlife Society (KWS) has started sealing gaps in the park's fences to prevent animals from moving out during the anticipated El Nino rains.
Lake Nakuru Community Warden Omari Muchanje said they have already launched the process of ensuring there are no escape paths for wildlife.
“We feel that the rains might force the animals to move away. Plus the fear of flash floods in the area might cause them to run away. We want to ensure that they will not attack any people living in the nearby areas,” he said.
Muchanje added that they were already carrying out community awareness in the area to inform people about the rains and the effect they might have on the wildlife
“We intend to ensure that the animals in the area will be well protected,” he added.
The warden pointed out that soil erosion will be a major challenge to deal with in the El Nino rains
“We intend to control the animals especially the hyenas which might become the major menace if they escape from the park,” he added.
He added that there were already troops set aside that would ensure that the animals did not leave the part despite the rains.
“We need to ensure that they are well controlled,” he said.
