Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Senior Warden in charge of Kisumu and Siaya Counties, Christine Boit, said the compensation will be handed over to the victims by the county commissioner Erastus Ekidor.

Boit said those who have been lined up for compensation are those who were affected before the enactment of the new wildlife Act.

"We will consider cases that happened before the enactment of new wildlife act 2013 on January 10. In Kisumu County alone we have around 17 cases who were injured. We will reach them so that they get their compensation,” she said.

She said the cheques will be ready for collection on Monday next week.

Speaking in Kisumu, Boit said relatives of those who were killed by wildlife will be paid Sh 200,000 while those who were injured will take home Sh 50, 000.

Boit further said they will use the old compensation rate and not the new rates under the revised Act.

Cases of wildlife human conflict have been rampant in the county of Kisumu owing to its vicinity to Lake Victoria.

Several people, mostly fishermen, have been attacked by hippos and crocodiles while fishing.
