Stakeholders in the wildlife sector now want signposts erected on the Nakuru-Gilgil highway indicating that there are animals crossing.
Speaking to journalist, Wildlife Conservationist Amos Chege cited that increased cases of wildlife being knocked in the area on a daily basis was now worrying.
He cited that there was also an urgent need to erect a bridge and speed bumps near the Nakuru toll station, where majority of the animals are knocked down.
“Every morning we see hyenas, buffaloes, impalas and zebra carcasses on the road and this is a huge cost to the tourism sector which is our main income earner,” cited Chege.
Chege argued that there were no erected signposts in the area indicating the presence of wildlife, saying this resulted in many accidents involving wild animals.
“In majority of the towns, the posts would indicate that the animals would be present and incase a driver is passing by, he will either slow down or be more careful. In this case they just rush by,” he added
Chege further added that he will collect 1000 signatures from the residents to petition KWS to put up the signposts, but cautioned drivers to be extremely careful on that the part of the highway.
“This is also dangerous for the motorists. Most of them loose control and end up in serious road accidents which would have otherwise been prevented by the signs,” added Chege.
