Lack of adequate learning facilities in Eldoret prison has forced authorities to send their secondary school students to Naivasha maximum prison for further studies.
This is according to Deputy Officer in charge of prisons Joseph Saitoti, who said the institution did not have enough teachers, books, classrooms and desks.
Saitoti said the students inmates were forced to sit on the floor while attending class sessions inside their dormitories for they do not have formal classrooms.
The institution has only two professional teachers and seven volunteers to cater for the current 82 primary school learners, according to Timothy Ndiwa who is in charge of the inmate’s welfare.
Ndiwa said there were other 68 inmates undertaking vocational training on courses such as carpentry, masonry, tailoring and plumbing.
He further said that despite challenges facing learning in the institutions, 24 inmates graduated early this month with a diploma in Theology with the support from well-wishers.
