Lands Cabinet Secretary Prof Jacob Kaimenyi has reaffirmed the government's commitment to the titling of public schools across the country.
Speaking at the Moi girls high school in Eldoret while issuing titles to 1,000 public schools from 13 counties, Kaimenyi noted that high number of schools without titles continues to hamper their development.
He revealed that out of 29,404 public schools in the country, over 83 per cent lacked lease certificates while another 55 per cent are not surveyed.
The CS noted that despite the challenges, the ministry in partnership with the National Lands Commission, the Shule Yangu Alliance and the Institution of Surveyors of Kenya has made progress in the titling process of public schools.
"In Uasin Gishu alone we have 441 schools have bem surveyed and 280 title deeds processed. Teachers have also been trained on requirements of getting a title deed," said Kaimenyi.
"Titling of schools ensures access to public utilities and social amenities such as play grounds. It also allows teachers and boards of management to focus on the quality of their education and not protecting their schools from legal action, intimidation and theft," he added.
The schools that received the title deeds were from Busia, Embu, Elgeiyo Marakwet, Kericho, Laikipia, Machakos, Makueni, Mombasa, Murang'a, Nyeri, Siaya, Taita Taveta and Uasin Gishu counties.
