It is a story that has gripped and blindsided Kenyans and most profoundly, the people of Nyeri, for its shocking details.

The governor of Nyeri, Dr. Wahome Gakuru, was involved in a grisly early morning accident that took his life.

Lydia Muthoni, wrapped in a Maasai Shuka to ward off the morning chill, was on her way from Kabati when she heard a huge sound behind that stopped her in her tracks.

It sounded like something metallic had been hit.

Instinctively, she looked back only to be hit in the face with sand thrown by a car that had rammed into a guardrail that blinded her.

She quickly removed the Maasai Shuka in a frantic bid to remove the sand that clogged her eyes.

What she saw sent chills down her spine.

''I saw a tire rolling very fast downhill. I bent over to avoid being hit by the tire... The tire stopped there. There were four people in the car. The governor and his bodyguard were badly injured in the leg. A young man in the car had his fingers cut. The fourth person was okay.'' Lydia Muthoni told a local television station in accented Swahili.
