There was traffic snarl up on Thursday morning along Nakuru-Eldoret Highway as rowdy students of Laikipia University Nakuru town campus engaged police in running battles.

The irate students had blocked the road protesting the death of one student who was knocked down by a speeding vehicle on Wednesday night.

The drama began at around 8.00pm on Wednesday night after the male student was hit by a speeding matatu as he crossed the road.

The student identified as Austin Rotich was pronounced dead upon arrival at St Marys’ Mission hospital in Gilgil.

The students called on Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to erect bumps on the highway around their campus.

Police were forced to fire in the air and lob teargas canisters at the students in order to disperse them.
