A section of leaders from Nyanza region now wants President Uhuru Kenyatta to authorize payment of Sh4.2b to Cooperative Bank, which was tasked to construct Lake Basin Mall.
The Lake Basin Mall, a government project under Lake Basin Development Authority, has not been handed over to the public despite having been completed several months ago.
Led by Nyando MP Fred Outa, the leaders claimed that the government was planning to sell the Mall to a top businessman allied to Jubilee government.
“Lake Basin Mall is a government project and not a Luo project. The government started the project and it must complete it and subsequently hand it over to the public,” said Outa.
“We will not allow any individual to take a public facility. We know monkey business the government is doing but we promise that it cannot be taken by a private developer,” added Kisumu Women Representative Rose Nyamunga.
Other leaders who joined calls to have the government offset the debt include Sylvanus Osele (Kaspul Kabondo and Christine Ombaka (Siaya).
