This came as the body of the 27-year-old fisherman identified as Evans Mukhana was recovered from the lake after a three day search.

Incidentally, the deceased was not wearing a life jacket when a boat carrying him and his colleague capsized on Sunday afternoon following strong winds.

According to chairman Lake Naivasha Boat Owners Association David Kilo, the death could have been avoided if the fisherman was wearing a safety jacket.

Kilo said it was a requirement every boat carrying fishermen or tourists around the water body conform to all safety measures.

“We have embarked on a process of training and creating awareness among all stakeholders around the lake to use life jackets while venturing into the water body,” he said.

Kilo termed the death as a big loss adding that so far ten people have drowned in the lake since the year began.

“We have had various sessions with the Kenya Maritime Authority where fishermen were taught on the need to ensure that they followed all the safety measures,” he said.

Kilo at the same time challenged the county government to fulfill its promise of training some youths in disaster management.

He noted that they had been forced to use local divers to search and retrieve the body of the fisherman after the tragedy occurred.

“When we lost three fishermen early in the year, the county government promised to sponsor some youths in disaster management and we are still waiting,” he said.
