There are no plans to lift the curfew and travel restrictions imposed in Lamu County any time soon, the government has said. The curfew, imposed by acting Interior CS Fred Matiang’i on July 9 this year in Basuba, Milimani, Mangai, Mararani, Kiangwe and Ishakani is expected to end on October 9.However, Linda Boni operation director Joseph Kanyiri and Lamu County Commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo have asked the public to continue adhering to the curfew and transport directives until there is calm and peace or when the government lifts them.On Tuesday, the duo said the move is aimed at restoring security in the region.“Fishermen here have been pushing wanting the curfew lifted so they carry out their business. We understand their frustration but the security of this region comes first and so we won’t be lifting the curfew anytime soon. Anyone found out outside during curfew time will be arrested,” said Kanyiri as quoted by The Star.Kitiyo said the number of al-Shabaab attacks and killings have gone down since the restrictions were put in place. He added that they have also increased patrols thereby urging residents to cooperate with security agencies to ensure there is peace and calm.“Through the cooperation of the public and the police, we shall win the war on al-Shabaab. What’s of importance is for people to be patient but vigilant. Let all people respect the curfew and the transport directives. Let there be no deliberate hindrances and all shall we well. Respect for law is paramount,” he added.
