Police officers who were on patrol in Lamu East exchanged fire for about 20 minutes with suspected Al Shabaab terrorists after nearly hitting an IED at Mambore - Mkokoni area on Tuesday.

The incident happened at 6.30pm near Kiunga Kengen Power Station. The terrorists shot at the officers as the vehicle went by.

According to Lamu county commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo, the terrorists were hiding in bushes.

"Officers overpowered the terrorists who later fled into the bushes. No officer was hurt," said Kitiyo.

Kitiyo insisted that  the Operation Linda Boni is on course and the security team will soon finish the few militants left.

He said the officers are alert as Al shabaab's IED plans are not working anymore.

"More IEDs are being detonated by our officers and this has frustrated the militants," he added.
