The race for the Lamu County Assembly speaker position is hotting up with six candidates declaring interest in the seat.

Poll losers in the county are among the candidates eyeing the seat.Abdalla Fadhil who ran for governor will face off against Waihiga Mwaure and Hassan Albeity who lost in the Senator race.Elected MCAs in the county are set to pick their speaker after being sworn in on Tuesday.Outgoing speaker Mohamed Hashim, Lamu West MP loser Abdu Kassim and Lamu Women rep loser Muthoni Marubu are also vying for the seat. The Lamu County Assembly will be comprised of 10 elected and 10 nominated members. The MCAs who retained their posts have urged their new counterparts not to frustrate Governor Fahim Twaha for the sake of development.James Komu (Hongwe), Anthony Njomo (Bahari), Paul Kimani (Mkunumbi) and Azhar Mbarak (Shella) argued that the county performed dismally because of the endless wrangles between MCAs and former Governor Issa Timamy.“So many things didn’t happen and we wasted a lot of time. However, it looks like things will be different this time round. Most MCAs have a good relationship with the current governor and that will make work easy,” said Komu, as quoted by Baraka FM.
