Over 1000 squatters in Lamu County now want to be resettled on a 350, 000 acres piece of idle land whose ownership was revoked by President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2015.The squatters have called upon the county government and the National Land Commission to consider their plight and address it as soon as possible.Speaking before they met, Lamu Governor Fahim Twaha, the squatters spokesman Rahima Kijipu asked the county government of Lamu to consult the National Lands Commission (NLC) under the chairmanship of Muhammad Swazuri to chat a way forward over the matter.Kijipu also said that the county boss had assured them hey will be resettled once he takes over the office. The squatters hail from Manda, Tewe, Mokowe, Bula Rahma, Hindi, and Swahili settlement scheme.“The Governor said he would help us once he gets to office. That's why we have decided to come and meet him. There is enough land to resettle all squatters in this county," said Kijipu, as quoted by The Star. The squatters, accused some of the tycoons in the county, whom they did not name, of grabbing the land meant for their resettlement. They further questioned why they have remained landless yet there are extensive and unoccupied fields in the county.
