The national government has assured Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Lamu of their security after they agreed to return to their homes.A section of the IDPs have left the Katsaka Kairu camp despite having earlier vowed to remain at the camp until they are compensated. Close to 40 percent of the people who were living in the camps have returned to their homes, the Nation has reported. The residents had been displaced following incessant terrorist attacks in different villages in Lamu including Pandanguo, Jima, Poromoko and Maleli. The Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) soldiers who are undertaking the operation Linda Boni aimed at flushing out al-Shabaab militants from the Boni forest, have assured residents of heightened security. The IDPs spokesperson, Mr Simon Mgumba, said they expected the government to compensate them before they could return to their homes but nothing has been done, adding that they are worried that life will not be easy for them. “We expected the government to send us home with a package for us to be able to start over once we leave the camp but nothing has been done. We are going back empty-handed. We are worried that life will be very hard for us at home,” said Mgumba, as quoted by the local daily.
