Land fragmentation in Kisii county is an emerging threat to food security in the country, Kisii county Governor James Ongwae has warned.
Speaking after he met with agricultural officers in a Kisii Hotel this morning Ongwae urged officer to advise farmers to slow down on fragmentation of farms to ensure optimal utilisation of their land to increase productivity.
“Land fragmentation has contributed significantly to the declining agricultural production among the farming households in Kisii county," said Ongwae.
Governor Ongwae lamented that majority of entrepreneurial farmers did not have sufficient land for sustainable agriculture, a major threat that has negative manifestations on production and socio-economic well-being of the farming households.
The Governor called on farmers to ensure their soil samples were tested for effective farm management to increase yields and profits.
“Soil testing determines the physical conditions, fertility or nutrient status and chemical properties that affect a soil’s suitability for growing plants," he added.
“The County government will continue to provide free seeds and other farm inputs to small scale farmers in a move aimed at boosting their farm yields through enhanced technological advancements in the agricultural sector," said the governor.
He said that showcasing the county’s diverse agricultural and technological prowess had attracted international investors to invest in the vast agricultural county.
