There was drama at a residential estate in the outskirts of Eldoret town on Monday after a second-year student at Moi University main campus was locked inside his house with his girlfriend.
The landlord who is middle-aged was walking around his rental houses collecting the rent and locking up the doors of those who had not paid. On reaching the door of the student, he knocked thrice but there was no response. He went ahead to assume that there was no one inside and locked the door from outside.
Just after about 10 minutes, the student was heard calling the landlord from inside the house, apparently, he was asleep while the door was being locked.
The student who agreed to speak on the condition of anonymity said his parents had promised to send money for the rent later on in the day.
"I called my father yesterday and he said he will send the money today," the student said.
After talking to the landlord in private for around a half an hour, they seemed to reach an agreement as the landlord finally walked away saying he did not intend to lock the student inside the room.
"I consider him as my son and I understand. I locked the door because I thought there was no one inside," the landlord told the small crowd of about 10 people who had now gathered to witness the drama.
All this time the girlfriend was still inside the room. After the landlord had finished collecting the rent from the rest of the houses he walked away seemingly having made peace with the student.
