Private hostel owners around Kisii University have been called upon to review their house rent as the institution is set to open on Monday in to accommodate a large number of students.
According to Kisii University vice chancellor John Akama, in the recent days, most of the hostel owners have been hiking the house rents hence becoming too expensive for the students to manage to live in the hostels.
In a meeting with members of the business community at the institution on Thursday, the Vice Chancellor said the move would help ensure that students live in a good environment and reduce crime rates in the area.
“We know you have power over your hostels but kindly consider the low-income students who can't pay higher rents,” he added.
He expressed the need for the owners to improve their facilities noting that though the university is building a Sh1 billion hostel that would accommodate many students, most of them would still reside in the private hostels due to the rising population.
