Nyamira landlords now risk facing jail term or heavy fines if found emptying sewerage effluents to rivers hence risking the health of the residents in the area.
Speaking in office early Wednesday, Nyamira County Public Health Officer, Isaac Kiangoi said there have been reports that some of the landlords in the area do not take in laws that regulate the disposal, and are fond of dispensing the effluents to the rivers, which are sources of water to area residents.
He said it is the responsibility of any person in the county to dispose off solid and liquid wastes in the most appropriate means possible.
This comes in the wake of public concern over the disposal of effluents, accusing landlords of directing wastes from their houses into the rivers.
He said though the county lacked a structured sewerage system, the landlords should ensure they make arrangements to dispose off their waste as recommended.
“We cannot allow anyone to pollute our rivers which supply water for domestic use to many of the residents,” he said.
The officer added that some landlords have resorted into unorthodox means of disposing of waste, saying the trader will be arraigned in court for contravening the public health Act.
