Nakuru County Public Health Officer Samuel Kingori has issued a 21-day notice to all landlords to improve sanitation facilities to their tenants failure to which they risk prosecution.

Speaking on Monday at Nakuru to the media, Kingori said the health team is on ground accessing sanitation facilities to ascertain they are fit for residents.

“Landlords must construct better toilets and make them accessible to tenants," said the county health boss.

The decision to inspect sanitation facilities comes in the wake of an outcry from the public that landlords have shelved their mandate of providing better sanitation services.

Kingori noted that latrines in most informal settlements are wanting.

"Most latrines in Sewage, Rhoda and Kaptwembwa are wanting and the landlords should construct better facilities for tenants," he said.

He said those who will not heed the warning will be arrested and prosecuted as well as their houses closed down.

"With expiry of the 21 days notice, any landlord who will not have complied with the health regulations will be arrested and taken to court and his/her houses closed," said Kingori.

He said the county government is committed to improving the sanitation of Nakuru residents to ensure they are not affected by waterborne diseases.

“We don't want the re-occurrence of a cholera outbreak and other water related diseases in Nakuru," said Kingori.

He also called on residents to maintain high level of hygiene to avert waterborne diseases .
