[Photo/nation.co.ke]Kenya Alliance of Residents Association (KARA) has warned landlords who refuse to give back rent deposit to their tenants when they express desire to look for new houses that they will face the full wrath of the law when the complaints land on their table.
Speaking on Tuesday in an interview with Radio Citizen, KARA Secretary General Henry Ochieng said that many people have been mistreated in the hands of landlords who decline to give back deposit as required.
However, he said that many people let this mistreatment go unattended to because they do not know the law.
“We will not allow mistreatment at all, but what needs to be done is to ensure that people understand their rights and responsibilities,” Ochieng said.
In addition, Ochieng said that there should be some form of formal engagement, an agreement between the parties so as to reduce the conflict between house owners and their clients especially when they (tenants) are leaving for other places.
“People should demand for formal engagement because you have nothing to fall back to if there is something that goes wrong,” Ochieng added.
The issue of landlords declining to give back their clients’ rent and mistreating them had been reported in major towns around the country.
